I want to eat where
the locals eat. I am up to my eyeballs in learning materials. The information just keeps flowing in. I learn something new, only to discover I have only hit the tip of the iceberg. (Just in case you haven't heard that saying once today.)
As you can see, I started this blog some time ago. I took the long way in getting back to what I have started, but I hope you will be pleased with the direction this blog is heading.

A new concept has been adapted here. One that will take up less of your time, and allow you to get the information you seek with less effort on your part. It sounds to good to be true. I just logged on to write my post and noticed that the last time I wrote was on August 23. Time does fly, and the older you get, the faster it flies.

School has just begun for all youngins, and that means more "me" time for mothers. That had me thinking about things I enjoy doing. One of them is getting out and enjoying the warm summer weather and riding my bike. One of my favorite bike rides is the Bob Jones Pathway in Avila Beach.

This trail is known for having no hills. Great for those of us that don't sport spandex. It's approximately 2 miles and sits bellow some of the most beautiful oak studded hills. The path is parallel to the creek, so there is a symphony of nature. The birds are singing the frogs are croaking and the creek is flowing in the background.

I thought that lizards and toads were not as plentiful as they were when I was a child, but after riding this bike trail, it gives me hope that they are still thriving in areas not so well traveled.

The trail starts at Ontario Road, off hwy 1, behind Avila Hot Springs. There are plenty of places to park your car. You can park on the side of the road or at a wine tasting room across the street from the pathway entrance.

The pathway is asphalt and the bushes are kept groomed back from the trail. That is a good thing because poison oak is easily spotted usually by its red and orange leaves, but is not a threat so long as you stay on the pathway.

The trail is so peaceful that it is easy to forget about everyone else, but there are a few busy streets that you must cross. These are well marked just be aware when taking smaller children.

The end of the trail is the recently upgraded Avila Beach. A great way to spend the rest of the day or the place to turn around and enjoy the trail one more time.

You can find more information on this and other useful topics at www.avilabeachca.com

Portuguese Festa, a tradition to enjoy

Here's something that I find interesting. San Luis Obispo has a large Portuguese population. The majority of California's Portuguese population can trace their origins to the Azores, a string of nine volcanic islands 800 miles off the coast of Europe. Portuguese people began arriving in California on whaling ships during the 19th century, California has an active and deeply rooted Portuguese community, that is big on traditions. One of the biggest and little-publicized events is the Saint Anthony festa or celebration.

The food at these Portuguese celebrations is unique and delicious. I was told that long ago the people of Portugal were hungry, so the queen sold some of here belongings to feed the people. They bought bread, meat and cabbage. They placed the items in large pots with many spices and slow cooked it. When it was ready they fed everyone. The old, sick and the hungry.

The recipe today varies, but the spices are always kept secret, and is handed down from generation to generation.

Each town celebrates on a different weekend. Last weekend it was Pismo Beaches turn for a Festa. It's like a giant family reunion. Everyone is welcome, and you will be treated like family, even if you have never been before.

If you have never been to one, It is a great experience and fun for the whole family. I have found information on these events in my newspaper, in the community or local section.

Lego.com Rocks

Here in SLO town, there are a lot of kids hooked up by the internet. It's nice because they aren't judged by what they look like or how old they are. They play many on line games. One of them is on the Lego web site. My son is 14 yrs. old, and he likes to build cities and games, traps and secret doors. I find it interesting and like that it keeps his creative mind thinking.

I have noticed if he makes a friend, and the teen lives out of town, it is a way for them to stay in touch and talk to each other.

He has more friends now than he has ever had before. It gives him a way to, "break the ice," when he is among strangers. As soon as he mentions the word Lego, everyone starts talking about different worlds they have seen or made.

I know computers have received allot of negative reactions because of the violence, language, and sexual content, but that has to be the parents fault for allowing them to view it and not putting some limits or controls on the system.

Lego.com is for all ages. It is fun, and I would highly recommend it.

4 Reasons NOT to visit San Luis Obispo

Here are my Top 5 reasons NOT to visit San Luis Obispo.

You don't like beautiful weather. SLO town has some of the best weather in the United States. In the summer, the days are in the upper 70's and in the winter the temperature averages in the 50's. The yearly total of rainfall is 22.6 inches. Mild temperatures, but you can enjoy all four seasons.

You don't like fresh air.The town is located minutes from the ocean. There is usually a nice lite breeze, and the air is never dry. It also smells clean and fresh.

You like traffic jams. We don't have over crowded freeways, rude people tired of it taking over an hour to get to work, when it's less then 10 miles away.

Enjoying yourself is not high on your priority list. People that live here love life, and they have no problem letting you know how it's done. Stop anyone on the street, and ask them anything. Where to eat, shop, directions or recommendations, we are more than happy to share our experiences and help you find what your looking for.

Now, you may ask me ,"why is there 4 reasons NOT to visit San Luis Obispo." To be quit honest, I was going to make it 5 reasons, but I could not come up with another reason to "not visit."
So, for the rest of you that might want to come see SLO town, I highly recommend it.

Passport

O.K., so maybe you aren't traveling to San Luis Obispo. You are going somewhere exotic and you need information on Passports. You have come to the right place.

A passport is a document that is internationally recognized, and verifies your nationality and identity, Used when you travel, this document is issued by the US department of state.

You must apply for a passport in person, and will be asked for certain documents to verify the information you are presenting. Those might be a valid drivers license or a bith certificate. You will also need two passport photos.
When the application process is finished you will need to pay a few fees. You can speed up the process by paying an expedite fee in addition to the regular application fee.

Minors are also required to have passports, must appear in person, and have the parent or legal guardians consent.

This process is very easy as long as you have all the proper paper work. There are many places to get a passport and if you would like more information, visit this link,

http://www.travel.state.gov/passport

I hope this was helpful,

P. I decided that the old saying is true. A picture is worth a thousand words. So I have spent a few days taking pictures of San Luis Obispo. I retraced my steps, and took photos for some of the subjects I have already written about, and some photos of things I might write about in the future.

also took some time off for a little fun. I loaded up my family, and a few extra friends, and took a trip to magic mountain.

One of the things I really enjoy about living here, is that I am centrally located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. If you head inland a bit you also are close to San Jose and Bakersfield.

Magic mountain is by Simi Valley. It takes about three and a half hours to drive there, going through Paso Robles and on Hwy 46 to interstate 5, and head south.
I didn't take pictures because there are allot of water rides and I didn't want to damage my camera. I will include a link for you to check out everything Magic Mountain has to offer.
They are famous for their roller coasters. There are standing up ones and sitting down ones, they have some amazing rides. We stayed from the time they open (10:00 am.) till the time they closed.(10:00 pm.)

I had heard allot of bad things about the park. I also read up on the internet about problems with gangs and weapons. We went on a Wednesday, and had no problems at all. Everyone was friendly, visiting and having a good time. I never felt uncomfortable of threatened.
The park is up for sale, so go, before they turn it into a housing track.

If you look on the Coke cans, some of them have a two for one offer for the park, so the regular price for an adult is usually $60.00 so you get two people in for that price, $30.00 each. I pay that much at a carnival for the rides.
Let me just say, It was worth it. We all had a blast. You can definitely loose your cares there. I recommend it to any one that like coasters.

Here's the link,
www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountain/index.asp

I'll be posting some new pictures throughout the website, so you might want to look around again. If there is anyone who wants some photos sent, let me know.
TTFN

Reaching your goals

San Luis Obispo has one of the top rated Universities, and a local collage that's tip top as well. Of course I'm talking about Cal Poly, short for California Polytechnic State University at http://www.calpoly.edu and Cuesta Collage at http://www.cuesta.edu
Both are great for meeting your goals and reaching your full potential.

Having these schools so close, is one of the reasons this town is interesting. The students breath life into what could be a boring, stuffy retirement town. The young mix with the old here, and they do it quite well. The students, for the most part are respectful and fun loving. They have many small businesses that help the community, and I have seen students volunteer for some well known organizations.

You can see about every style of clothing here, from the young students with the latest young fashions, to the hippie, that never goes out of style. What I really think is fun, is that the seniors seem to dress very stylish. They are some of the best looking and most active folks I have seen in any community.

Today, I want to hear from you.

I really like living here in San Luis Obispo, and I tell all my friends about the things I do here. It is a fun, family event. It happens every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:00 pm.The middle of downtown San Luis Obispo is closed to vehicles . That would be Hiugerra Street, and everyone sets up booths. The first two blocks on the west end are mostly made up of BBQ pits and stores that set up outside. The next two blocks are produce, flowers, nuts, and other healthy food. Then there is a few more food booths at the end. Some restaurants serve dishes only available at Farmers Market, like lentil soup, and the prices are so reasonable.
Another reason everyone is having so much fun is the music. They have local bands playing on some corners. They play a huge variety of music. sometimes it's Jazz other times it's older Rock and Roll. You don't know until your there. Other corners have balloon artists, cartoonist, face painters and puppet shows.

I try and go for at least an hour every Thursday. In the summer the days are long and it's light out till almost 9:00 pm. The weather was beautiful last Thursday. I bought a half flat of strawberries for $6.00

If you enjoy people watching, and you like to get out for a late walk, you don't want to miss Farmer's Market.

SLO Passport Card

If you don't know what a SLO Passport Card is, let me tell you. It is a great way to try new things, and get a deal too. There are many businesses that participate. These are the seven different categorise,

Dinning and Foods

Entertainment and Recreation

Health and Day Spas

Clothing and Gifts

Home and Design

Hotels and Lodging

Business and Service

Most of them have buy one get one free. If they don't have that, they will have a great deal for you. The cards are good for one year and the only limitations are, that you can't use them on holidays. They give you two books that have a hole lot of information on the town, the area, the events going on for the entire year, and alot more useful information. They are great for visitors or locals.

Visitors to the Central Coast: Please e-mail your name, mailing address and phone number to tconklin@slopassport.com or call (805) 545-9777 to request your copy.

High Street Deli, still taste great.

Yesterday I had a nice surprise. Right around the corner from me is the High Street Deli. The last time I was there had to have been four years ago, and it wasn't very impressive. I don't even remember the experience.
I have my SLO County Passport Card, and the the High Street Deli offers buy one, get one free if you have the card, so I decided to take a walk over there.
Well I bought the special for my picky teenager, who never tries anything new. A french roll with pesto, turkey, lettuce tomato, and melted jack cheese. For myself, my own creation of cheeses and veggies.
Mine was delicious. He ate his whole sandwich, and it was BIG. I could only eat half of mine. My son asked if he could have the same thing for lunch the next day too. I walked over there today only to find out that they make the pesto fresh on Wednesdays only, so he will have to wait a week, but it's worth it.
They offer specials every day. They have put together some tasty combinations that keep people comming back for more. They all sound terrific
It is a favorite spot for the locals, so lunch is crowded. I read it has always been a market and deli. It was built in the 1930's and feed the railroad folks.
They have some old photos of the building to look at while you wait for your food. I would highly recommend stopping by for a late lunch, there are tables outside to enjoy the day and visit with the locals.

Out of the ordinary

Those Born 1930-1979! - TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna
from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma,
we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright
colored lead-based paints.

We had no child proof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we
took hitchhiking. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no
car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from
the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four
friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-ade made
with sugar, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all anyway,
and we were OK. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of
scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the
brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve
the problem.

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at
all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no
surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no
Internet or chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found
them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our
10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although
we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or
rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them! Little League had
tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to
deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us
out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the
law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and
responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! If YOU are one of them . . CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow
up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our
lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids
so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't
it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:
"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding,
severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and
with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,"Are we sure this is a
good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

A special thanks to someone that thinks alike.

Message in a Bottle

Do you ever feel like no one is out there? I think perfect vacations are few and far between, if you ever get one at all. Family or your sanity should be the most important things in your life. I want you to have the most relaxing, never ever will forget, time of your life. It can happen. All you got to do is email, phone or write me, and say, I'm comming to San Luis Obispo, what can I do when I get there? I have maps and discounts available for the asking. I have connections with some great tour companies, where they will take you for a day or a half day. The rates are reasonable and the drivers a wonderful. I have found one bad spot in my perfect little peach of a town, and they may be more. When my son had to go to a middle school, my choices were very limited. I started him at Laguna Middle School, that was a mistake. Imagine 750 pubesic teenagers together and hardly any supervision. It wasn't good. There also seemed to be quite a few burnt out teachers workng for the medical benefits, rather then for the joy teaching gives them. In fact, they seemed to have a chip on their shoulder for having to be there with all these wild teenagers.

Laguna is the only public middle school in San Luis Obispo, so my other option was to enroll him in Olive Grove Charter School. That is what I did about halfway into the seventh grade. Olive Grove is a nice home school program. If your child works well independently, or if you can hook up with a couple of families to create your own little study group. We finished out the seventh grade there, but it wasn't stress free for me or my son. I didn't want to do that for his eighth grade.

I did more research before he reached the eighth grade and found a private school. It is called The laureate private school. It is a good school with a small amount of children. I think that is important for seventh and eighth grades. My boy needed some one on one when it came to understanding the homework, and asking questions. That need was met. He is now entering the ninth grade. I have enrolled him in classes this summer so he can hang with his friends and keep the brain sharp.

I am just not happy with the schools wherever I live. The best school he went to was in Colorado. I'm not sure why that is. He has been to school in Las Vegas. They put so much money in their schools, his elementary school had a Geo dome in it. It had a huge tropical rain forest in it and a waterfall. To top it all off, inside the rain forest was a cave with a computer lab inside. The children could do experiments inside the lab. It was way cool, but their homework program was over complicated. I just want my som to learn the basics. Math, english, science and history. I am finding that now schools are stepping over their bounds and trying to teach everything from morals and ethics to values and team spirit.

You can learn more about the schools by clicking on my link slochamber.org

It's Good to Live in SLO

I think most everyone that lives here knows how good we have it. That's why most of us have a relaxed way of life. When I moved to Las Vegas I was amazed at some of the things you have to deal with in a large heavily populated area.

One thing I had a hard time with was the D.M.V. or Department of Motor Vehicles. I had to go there today to register my car. It brought back memories.

There was so many people moving into that area, that the wait at the D.M.V. was about four hours. They have T.V. to help the time go by. I saw two people with line waiting businesses. Someone will actually stand in line for you, then phone you when your number is close to being called. The parking lot was the size of a Wal-mart. I would guess there was at least 150 people there all day long.

No, here in San Luis Obispo, It takes about twenty minutes to get you in and out. I visited with a few people, talked about the weather and the time, I usually visit wherever I go.

It was just another day of the SLO life.

Just for Furry Friends

You can't say San Luis People don't love our animals. We have two lovely dog parks, as well as many stores designed just for our furry friends. I went for a long walk today, the weather was perfect to get out and see whats new down town. About halfway down marsh street my dog, Riley, caught a whiff of something and off we went. He stopped in front on a store I hadn't noticed before. It was called Waggin' Tail cafe' and Barkery. I followed Riley inside. He began speed smelling while I visited with the owner. Everything in the store was for dogs. They had a glass display case filled with elegant looking treats. My mouth watered until I was told they were dog treats. Riley enjoyed a peanut butter cookie. The gentleman told me they would soon be offering coffee and drinks along with Internet services. The store had tables and chairs for people. It was done quite nice. The prices seemed competitive. Before leaving the gentleman took a picture of Riley to put on his fan wall, it already contained about 150 or so pictures of satisfied customers. Riley and I will definitely be back. The address is; 722 Marsh Street, In... you guessed it, San Luis Obispo. I'm sure it has to do with the owners. Paul Brown opened it in 1994, and is a Cal Poly graduate. He and his wife are very involved in the community. The Browns have worked hard to make Mothers Tavern an essential part of the downtown experience. It's the perfect place to go after a day of shopping.

They serve the freshest food and it's not in small quantity chick food portions. I am a vegetarian, and I usually order a sandwich. It always surprises me how they pile it high with fresh avocado, red ripe tomatoes and all the veggies I would use, if I were making the sandwich at home. They also have an outstanding breakfast on the weekends.

Besides the delicious food and drink, Mother's tavern has entertainment seven days a week. They have big band Sunday, dancing to a DJ and singing to Karaoke.

I'm told they have an excellent catering service that includes food and bar, or you can have a private party there.

The address is 725 Higuera Street, downtown SLO. Phone (805) 541-8733

If you have a SLO County Passport Card you can Buy one entree and 2 drinks, get one entree Free. 10% off thereafter.

If you don't know what a SLO Passport Card is, let me tell you. It is a great way to try new things, and get a deal too. There are many businesses that participate. These are the seven different categorise,

Dinning and Foods

Entertainment and Recreation

Health and Day Spas

Clothing and Gifts

Home and Design

Hotels and Lodging

Business and Service

Most of them have buy one get one free. If they don't have that, they will have a great deal for you. The cards are good for one year and the only limitations are, that you can't use them on holidays. They give you two books that have a hole lot of information on the town, the area, the events going on for the entire year, and allot more useful information. They are great for visitors or locals.

Avila Valley Barn, a must see.

One of the best finds on the outskirts of San Luis Obispo has got to be the Avila Valley Barn. I have a long time friendship with the owners and have watched this place grow from a barn to a thriving booming business. It is all due to the owners Bruce and Debbie. They have turned it into an outdoor experience. There is two lovely barns. One has mostly preserves and food items, along with some wonderful folk art and home decor must haves. There is a glass viewing area where you can watch the bakers at work baking up delicious treats. They are well known for their pies. Olallieberry, peach and apricot to name a few.

The second barn, located just a few feet away. has some nice books about the local history among other things. You can expect to find some old fashion sweets and barrels full of handy kitchen items. This barn also has many food items and a children's section too.

Between the barns you will walk around rows and crates full of fruits and vegetables, many grown right at the ranch.

If you time it right, you will have the choice of picking your own raspberries and olallieberries, or buying them fresh picked by the staff. They also offer a wagon ride to and from the picking orchard, where you will find apples, peaches and apricots to name a few.

When the corn is ripe, it is the sweetest, and on weekends they have a stand where you can purchase it fresh roasted, (I always get it dunked in butter).

There are many things to taste before you buy. You are always welcome to sample the fruit, something I really like. They have a grass area with tables and chairs for relaxing and enjoying the day.

Oh, did I mention they have an ice cream shop. It is a local brand with some very fresh flavors, and another room full of goodies to look at and buy.

Now, if all that doesn't impress you, they have a petting zoo. You can pet and feed the animals. This is truly a unique place. It is a must see if you are in the San Luis Obispo area.

I tell all my friends with kids, if you are just traveling through, stop there. It's just off the freeway, a great place to pick up some healthy snacks, and the kids can run around and strech out thier legs, and burn off some energy.

If you are leaving San Luis Obispo heading south it is about 10 minutes. Take the second Avila exit and head west (the only way you can go) you won't miss it it's only a half mile down the road.
If you are coming from Shell beach go north 1 mile and take the Avila Hot Spring exit , head west a half mile .It is well marked with lots of signs and you will always see a parking lot full of cars.

Opened 7 days a week. Phone them for more infomation at 805 595-2810
Enjoy.
If you have been there, please leave your comments. I am working on putting together some information on the area. Don't worry, I'm not going to charge anything! I just want people that are new to San Luis Obispo to love it here like I do. A vacation or a weekend getaway should be worry free. That's what makes them special.

I was at the Chamber of Commerce last week (another good source for information) and noticed that there was a business night at Embassy Suites. I think it was on a Wednesday. The idea behind it was that businesses could network with other businesses. A lot of people showed up. Partly because it was free I'm sure. It turned out to be beneficial to me.

I needed to find a summer program for my son, I think I found three of them. I was looking for wine makers for another blog I do, there were four or more. I accomplished several things I had been putting off. There was over 50, if not 100 businesses handing out promotional items. Pens, note pads, toys for kids, magnets all sorts of things. Others decided to use food to attract people. It seemed to work.

I met some great people and now have a bigger network.

So there is something else to do in SLO town. It's once a year.
